Join me for a fun-filled and exciting photographic adventure to Caddo Lake in Northeast Texas and Northwest Louisiana. This is a great time to catch fall color in the cypress groves, and we will have time to explore the area and make memorable images.

We will meet at Backwater Jacks on the afternoon of the 5th to pick up kayaks and shakeout any bugs, paddling instruction if needed and so on and have a photo session at a nearby location (by kayak) before moving in to our lodging for the week. Directions will follow. We will photograph from a pontoon boat on the morning of the 6th and 7th. This has always been a productive part of the tour and offers easy access to parts of the lake not easy to paddle to. The cost for the boat charter is not included and is on a shared basis. You can opt out if you wish.

Lodging is shared in a 4-bedroom luxury property with boat launch in the back yard and images that can be made from the back porch. The house offers sufficient privacy yet the ambience of a group setting. Cost per person is less per night than most hotels and will be divided evenly amongst us. I pay my own share by the way.

Happiness starts at the back porch where this view greets you.

Yes, we will photograph from kayak for several sessions. Fret not. If you have never been in a flat-water fishing kayak they are not the tippy white water boats you may have seen or been in. On the 2023 workshop, only one person was under 60 and they all managed well with less than 30 minutes of coaching. You can do it too. To be sure there are a few things to know and that will be covered well before the trip as well as on-site so that you are prepared for the experience.

Please note: most of your images will be made hand-held.

Fear not, modern image stabilization and high ISO sensor performance work perfectly for this application.

Morning comes early, so there will not be much activity after dinner. Morning light offers the best chances of mist and fog. The afternoon light offers back illuminated Spanish moss that glows like it is on fire. As the sun drops in the sky spotlights appear in the groves and present constantly changing opportunities. Blue sky of death? No problem. Reflections and spotlights abound. No wasted moments. Plan on a morning session ending in time for breakfast. You will need sleep so a good nap after breakfast may suit you. There may be time for image critiques and Photoshop sessions if you like. The lakeside lodging allows for a little more sleep by cutting down travel time to and from launch sites but still morning comes early so pacing yourself can make a difference. Don’t pass up an opportunity for a nap!

Getting There:

By air: 1) Fly to Shreveport, LA rent a car and drive less than one hour to your lodging of choice. 2) Fly to Dallas which has much better air connections at the expense of a longer, 2 ½ hour drive. DFW flights are often less expensive. Alternatively, drive there, bringing your kayak if you have one. Directions to the meet up and house will be provided as the time draws near.

Expenses:

Approximately $50/day for kayak rental.

Approximately $80 / per person for the morning charter excursions.

Tuition for the 7 days is set at $1650.00 with a $100 discount offered to all alumni from any of my workshops.

Deposit of $350.00 due with registration with balance due 30 days out.

Lodging is not included. I will invoice separately on the website for the house when we have a firm roster. Non-photographing spouse / partner may possibly be accommodated. Inquire if interested.

Covid vaccination required for attendance.

Antigen testing with a home kit requested no more than 24 hours prior.
